Conceptual Urban Planning
Project Type: Urban Design
Roles: Designer
Team: Group with Andrea Rovetta
Timeline: Fall 2014
With the help of computer, we find that data start to play a important role in the way the city is understood and envisioned. How can architect develop a data platform and utilize these data to reform the shape of living space?
The aim of this project was to improve the relationship be tween systems of food production, distribution and consumption in urban areas through the development of a ‘calculator’, a computational methodology that translated hard data from farming strategies, human dietary needs & behaviors, space optimization related to farming and living, into functional schemes. The resultant data helped formulate a series of design schemes for speculative models for self -sufficient integrated living.
16 students working on 45 most common crops and fullfill human’s daily life. The goal of the research is to figure the basic information of each crops including farming cycle and farming.
The picture below is the example of wheet in the farm data collection book. Generally, the light requirement, water requirement, temperature range, soil type, depth of the soil as well as companion crops/animals of the wheet are the main data we care about.
Based on the data collected on phase 1, I try to construct a grasshopper calculator which will directly presenting to us how much space we need to farm each crops for 10000 people. Start ing from setup the each square meter’s production for each crop, I easily figured out how much space we need for all those 45 crops for 10000 people.
In order to achieve the highest efficiency for both space &farming cycle. A highly compressed cubic machine become our first solution.
